  9. Okay, I got the Acer today and have it up and running.  Right now I'm using it
  10. in monochrome mode, and it looks fairly sharp doing 49 lines in Uniterm.

  12. I tried it with a demo program that uses software overscan, the "Whattheheck"
  13. Demo, and it was excellent.  The picture moves a little to the left in 50 Hz
  14. mode, but you can deal with that.  I had to adjust the vertical size and height
  15. a little to have it look good.  At first it was stretched vertically and you
  16. could see gaps between the scan lines.

  18. In overscan, the graphics fill the screen from left to right edge.  Otherwise,
  19. in medium and low resolution the screen edges are pretty far within the
  20. picture.  There's about an inch and a half to either side where you can't move
  21. an icon or the cursor arrow.  I think I can get used to that.

  23. The terminator archive has a file called OVERSCN2.ARC that describes in detail
  24. how you can modify your ST or Mega to use a larger screen area on a monitor
  25. like this.  I'm thinking about it.

  27. BIGSCRN.PRG does not increase the visible screen area -- I was hoping against
  28. logic that it might.

  30. I'm happy with the result.  I had to tap the sound out to an amplifier since
  31. the Acer does not have a speaker.  Also, Talon tried to sell me a special 
  32. cable to connect the monitor.  YOU DON'T NEED ONE.  One of the two cables
  33. already supplied with the monitor works just fine!  Save that $15.00.  Make
  34. sure they include the two cables as advertised in their literature though.

  36. I may tire of tweaking the position and height a little when switching between
  37. modes, but it seems liveable for the result.  I have to try it with a spectrum
  38. picture display next.  The colors are sharp.  The screen is considerably
  39. bigger too.

  41. If you have $420 you can live without, this monitor seems like a good idea.

  43. There is one possible caveat -- I may have a defective unit.  The picture in
  44. Uniterm (I was using Tek 4010 graphics) shrank vertically and expanded a 
  45. couple of times.  I had the omniswitch and cables draped on top of the moni-
  46. tor.  I reseated the connectors and moved the omniswitch, and the problem
  47. hasn't returned.  I'm on the lookout though.
